Types of Dental Bone Grafts

An oral surgeon with over 15 years of experience, Dr. John Won serves patients at POMS Facial Surgery. In his work as an oral surgeon, Dr. John Won performs both minor and major bone grafts.

Dental bone grafting is a surgical bone augmentation procedure undertaken to provide additional support in the jaw or in cases of jawbone loss due to issues like advanced gum disease. During the procedure, the oral surgeon or dentist makes an incision in the jaw and attaches a support material.

There are several types of bone grafts. Another person’s bone is used in an allograft, while a xenograft utilizes bone from another species. Some patients may prefer a synthetic material such as bioglass or calcium phosphate.

In more severe cases of bone loss, autografts are the preferred approach to bone grafting, since they use the bone from the patient’s own body, promoting new bone formation and faster healing. During an autograft, the surgeon usually takes a small amount of material from the tibia, hip, or back of the jaw.

Facial Disorders through Surgery

With over 15 years of practice, John Won is an oral surgeon at the POMS Facial Surgery in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. As an oral surgeon, John Won has had extensive experience in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Known as the bridge between medicine and dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery is a specialty of dentistry that involves the diagnosis, surgery, and treatment of injuries, defects, and diseases that involve the functional and esthetical features of the jawbone and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region. Most of the surgeries performed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons are usually outpatient procedures. Some of these procedures are performed to treat conditions such as misaligned jaws, oral reconstructive surgery, impacted wisdom teeth, dental implants, and cancers of the head and neck.

After the procedure, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon provides the patient with a course to aid in recovery. They also offer follow-up appointments to monitor the recovery process after the surgery.

Target Shooting Safety Practices for Beginners

With nearly two decades of experience as a physician, Dr. John Won serves as an oral surgeon in private practice at POMS Facial Surgery. When he is not busy with his duties as an oral surgeon, John Won enjoys target shooting.

The sport of target shooting includes several disciplines, such as practical rifle, practical shotgun, and clay shooting. Safety is an aspect that remains imperative in any target shooting practice mainly because it involves using projectiles and firearms. For instance, shooters should only authorized targets like cardboard paper, clay, and other safety-rated targets but never target plastic, metal, or electric components. Targets in the ground level should always have a proper backstop to reduce the chances of ricocheting and potentially harming people or animals.

The firearm should be kept unloaded until the moment of use and keep the finger off the trigger guard. If the climate is hot and windy, it is best to avoid engaging in target practice near dry vegetation.

The Place of Dentacoin in Dental Practice

Dr. John Won, the principal surgeon of POMS Facial Surgery in its offices in Raleigh and Elizabeth City in North Carolina, provides nonsurgical oral and facial care solutions as well as out-patient oral and maxillofacial surgery. He has been an oral surgeon for over 15 years. At present, Dr. John Won is involved in integrating blockchain technology into his dental practice.

Blockchain technology is an innovative tool that was first used by the finance and banking sector to handle and manage enormous amounts of data. Today, the healthcare industry, particularly dental medicine, has also embraced blockchain technology. The first blockchain solution used in dental practice is called Dentacoin and was introduced in 2017.

Dentacoin offers three functions. One function is called Dentacoin Assurance, which operates out of a smart contract between the dentist and the patient whereby the patient can access preventive dental care to make his or her treatment sustainable. The smart contract involves a small amount of monthly fees which allows the patient to receive ongoing treatment and the dentist to receive an ongoing stream of income.

Another function is called Dentacare App, which works like an aftercare app, provides the patient with instructions on how to maintain proper oral care and hygiene. Through this interactive app, patients can access dentists for assistance, including follow-up treatments so that patients can develop positive dental habits that can last for a lifetime. The third function, called DentaVox Surveys, serves as a market research platform where the patient provides valuable feedback by filling in questionnaires related to his or her dental care experience.

Dentacoin helps dentists in the efficient management and storage of patient records since these records are managed by blockchain. Also, the immutable characteristics of blockchain eliminate the incidence of false claims and other fraudulent data access.
